Post CARD act the more sophisticated credit card issuers are the ones to benefit

[March 31, 2011]

After the completion of one year the credit CARD Act has been a success and this is likely to have an impact overall and the more sophisticated companies are likely to get stronger by the day whereas the less advanced ones will become much weaker as the days go by.

As per the credit card reform law that has been passed on 22nd February, 2010, the transparency in rules has increased throughout the card industry and this has resulted in better relations between the issuers and the customers as fees and other related charges are expressed more clearly. In addition to this, another interesting feature is that the CARD Act has not led to the increase in interest rates nor led to decreased amounts of the available credit limit.

While both these things have occurred it has not been attributed to the CARD Act and hence the Act will not go through any major change in the years to come. Hence some of these events and trends will have to be anticipated in the credit card industry during the years to come.

Companies like CompuCredit and First Premier are likely to undergo commoditization as their unsophisticated underwriting techniques will not be in a position to sustain unsecured products. Before the CARD Act came into existence these companies were routinely charging fees that was as high as $200 for $250 credit lines and were hence willing to approve almost all the applications for the credit cards.
