Credit Card Lifestyle - Is It Really You?

[September 21, 2007]

There is a lot of information on the Credit Cards. Today's state of the credit card industry really makes it so that most of us can't even imagine our lives without these plastic cards. No need to argue that credit cards can be used virtually anywhere. Still, there are some drawbacks of "plastic money". It is always a plus to know them so that to avoid some typical mistakes.

To start with, let me brief you on some basic features of a credit card. We all know about that so often advertised introductory period, which lasts for 6-12 months. After this period you will be charged with interest. Also known as APR for purchases. The problem is that it is not the only rate you will need to deal with when having a credit card.

Think wisely when withdrawing money from an ATM! In the terms and rules of your credit card there is sure to be a note that withdrawing also requires some charges. Cash advance rate is the reason why you might want to avoid the ATM services. You just might not know that every time you make cash withdrawal transaction, more than 20 percent will most likely be applied to the some you withdraw.

If you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, without any banking services (except those ATMs), - use your plastic card. Just be smart when entering the desired sum of money - I believe you are not dreaming of paying cash advance fees twice, aren't you?

Unfortunately, there are some other disadvantages. Better to say - drawbacks. I am talking about a default rate. As soon as the bank starts ranking you as a risky client (hopefully, it will never do so!), this interest rate applies! Miss one or two payments, believe me, you are a risky client. So, please, be cautious about this aspect. Control your payments. Once being considered risky, it might be rather problematic to get back on track.

Whether to avoid using credit cards or not - it all depends largely on your lifestyle. There are people who always have troubles managing their finances. If you are one of those - most likely, you will end up in deep debts. Easy access to money is just an illusion that led lots of people to sad situations. A "payday" will come anyway - you have to understand it clearly. Otherwise, beware!

Having read this article, if you feel that credit card is not for you; don't think that you can't enjoy all the services that a plastic card provides. There are hundreds of different credit card applications for prepaid or secured credit cards. These ones are pretty much similar to usual debit cards. In order to have such card, you will need a deposit made. It will represent your credit limit.

Before making any decision, make sure that you feel confident about your financial state. It is also vital that you get acquainted with all the credit card offers at the market. All this successfully done, you will be a happy credit card holder.
