2011 heralds the stabilization of fees on credit cards

[June 15, 2011]

The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 was intended to bring about the changes in the way the credit card industry functioned and place a clamp on the sky high fees that were being charged by various providers, therefore increasing the financial burden of the customers. As a follow up to the implementation of the act, there have been many studies conducted to see the impact of this act on the credit card industry and the consumers.

One of the recent studies conducted to observe the impact of this act on the various credit card fees took into consideration around 66 cards issued by over 50 lenders in the United States. The details of various factors associated such as the upfront deposit, eligibility criteria and credit card fees were collected and analyzed as a part of the study.

The results of the study have revealed that close to 79% of the credit cards analyzed do not carry any over the limit fees anymore. The penalty fees on the cards that were a part of the study ranged varied between $15 and $39. Before the implementation of the card act, many financial experts had predicted a steep rise in the annual fees on credit cards. However, contrary to their prediction, studies have revealed that 95% of the credit cards that were are a part of the study did not have any annual fees associated to them. While 8 credit cards did not charge any fees for foreign transactions, the others charged just 1% to 3% for these transactions.
